Beaches of Lourinhã

Eleven beaches, endless Atlantic

From the lively sands of Areia Branca to hidden coves beneath dinosaur cliffs, the Lourinhã coast is just minutes from Casa Bica Vista.

On your doorstep

A beach for every day

The Lourinhã coastline has eleven Atlantic beaches. Some are busy with cafés and surf schools; others are wild and quiet, reached by cliff paths. Lifeguards watch over the main beaches during the bathing season, which normally runs from mid-June to mid-September.

The closest beaches to the house are along the Ribamar coast, a short drive away: Porto Dinheiro, Valmitão, Porto das Barcas and Peralta. Areia Branca, the main beach, is about 6 km away.

Praia da Areia Branca

The lively one

Lourinhã's main beach is a long sweep of golden sand with a beach promenade, cafés and restaurants, lifeguards in summer and a playground. It is one of the best places on the coast to learn to surf, with several surf schools on the beach.

Stay for lunch with your toes in the sand, then for sunset drinks. See our food & wine guide for our favourite tables here, including Areal by Chakall.

Best for: families, first surf lessons, beach restaurants.

Praia de Porto Dinheiro with fishing boats and beach umbrellas

Porto Dinheiro

Our nearest beach: a pretty fishing village in Ribamar, with boats pulled up on the sand, simple fish restaurants and good waves. Every August the Festa do Mar celebrates the fishing community.

Rock shelves and the Atlantic on the Lourinhã coast

Peralta & Porto das Barcas

Dramatic cliffs, rock pools and reliable surf. These cliffs are famous for dinosaur fossils: a clutch of dinosaur eggs with embryos was found at Porto das Barcas in 2005.

The coast near Paimogo and Praia do Caniçal

Paimogo

A sheltered bay with calmer water, watched over by the Fort of Paimogo, built in 1674 to guard the coast against raiders. The world-famous nest of dinosaur eggs now in the Lourinhã Museum was found here.

Wild, wide and peaceful at the southern end of the Ribamar coast. A favourite for long walks and for escaping the crowds in high summer.

Beach tips

Stay by the sea

Beach by day, sunsets by the pool

Wake up to the ocean view, spend the day on the sand, and come home to the heated pool and a glass of something cold.
